29th August 2007 was the day I took my first flight with Flight Academy Barton and John Davidson was my instructor and he remained that throughout my PPL course.
Prior to this I researched all the local flying schools in Manchester and what struck me about John and Flight Academy Barton was their passion for aviation not just the size of cheque book. He took time to find out about me and what I wanted to do if I gained a PPL, he spent time showing me around G-TASH the Cessna 172 that was home for all of my training and most of all I liked his honest, fun and direct approach…… Plus he loves a brew (cup of tea for non Mancs) a must for an aspiring pilot training with John!!
John’s approach to training was right for me especially if you consider my schooling as I was always looking out the window and not inside the classroom but John applied the right amount of pressure when required and gave me his time far beyond what was required to get me through the exams and the result on April 21st 2009 was a pass first time on my Skills Test.
My relationship with John and Flight Academy Barton did not end as soon as I’d gained my PPL and paid my bill he took an interest in the flying I was doing (still does) and always asks about my planning and the route I was taking to my destination, he helped with selection of an aircraft group to join and always welcomes a quick text from ex-students on return from a trip with family and friends.
Just 12 months after passing my PPL I was back at Flight Academy Barton’s door signing up for the IMC Rating and again John was to be my instructor along with Louis Blanchet for some of the course. Gaining an IMC rating has to be the hardest thing I’ve done in aviation to date but once again John and Louis took time to explain each lesson, answer as many questions as I had
and got me through the rating even when you questioned your own ability they still believed in you.As well as being my PPL/IMC instructor I now class John as a good friend.

Flight Academy Barton’s training has been fantastic and made the whole experience of obtaining my PPL both fun and immensely rewarding so much so that I am currently trying to complete my IMC rating there!
Throughout my training the instructors at Flight Academy Barton were very knowledgeable about all aspects of flying and were always very keen to help in whatever way the could whether that be in the air or going through elements of ground school to make sure everything had sunk in!
The range and quality of all the different aircraft was a huge plus and I cannot recommend Flight Academy Barton more highly.
